About the Designer:
Heather Short (nee Shannon) was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Ever since childhood, Heather has been passionate about the arts. She loves to draw, paint, sculpt, sew, weave and create beauty with her hands. She remembers stringing beads from the time she was very young and delighting in the beautiful color combinations and textures of the beads. "We did not have much money when I was growing up and I remember making paper beads from rolled pages in magazines! My mother taught me to be very resourceful."
The creative vein runs through her entire family. Two of her siblings have made successful careers in the fashion and music industry and her younger brother is an immigration specialist.
In 1986, Heather moved to the U.S., where she has been working as an artist & designer for the past 25 years. "I remember someone telling me once that if you tap into the things you loved to do as a child - you will usually find your true passion in life - the best gift comes when you can forge a career out of that passion!". In 1999 she founded Faux Finish By Design, a successful painting and mural business and over the years has transformed plain walls into beautiful works of art in many residences throughout San Diego County (www.fauxbydesign.com). Her work has been featured in several issues of San Diego magazine with noted recognition for the renovation work of Judge Alfred Haines historic home in Golden Hill. Additional awards & accomplishments are also mentioned on: www.artmajeur.com/heathershort
In 2004, Heather returned to the world of jewelry making and began stringing beads as a way to relax after a long day of climbing ladders and painting ceilings. What started as a hobby soon became a passion and Heather knew she was hooked. She now sells her jewelry throughout the U.S. and Canada and is continually overwhelmed by the positive response and encouraging feedback she receives from clients who have become Star Candy collectors! Heather's jewelry can be seen on CNN news anchors: Kyra Phillips, Kathleen Kennedy, Linda Stouffer, Kelli Arena, KABC7's (Los Angeles) Main Anchor, Michelle Tuzee, and the legendary Ms. Bobbie Wygant, Entertainment Reporter in Dallas, Texas and first female host of Dateline, NBC. According to Kyra Phillips at CNN: "Heather's necklaces have a professional flair, in addition to being stunning & unusual".
The name "Star Candy" came from two sources - the Italian Glass beads that Heather uses in her jewelry are so colorful they look like hard candy - good enough to eat! Heather loves combining the beautiful Glass Beads with genuine Swarovski Crystals, Semi-Precious Stones, Freshwater Pearls and Bali Sterling Silver - thus creating that "Star" feeling when women wear her jewelry. She also packages & ships her jewelry in one-of-a-kind simulated candy packaging. Currently, Heather is working as a jewelry designer & consultant for a new company in New York City that will open in September 2010.
"I am delighted at the response my jewelry gets. It is exciting and heart warming to see that women embrace my style and feel special wearing Star Candy Designs! My customers love that their orders are shipped promptly and ready to give as gifts!"
Due to many requests, Heather has now added "Love Candy" - a beautiful collection of affordable bridal designs that are perfect for every woman in the wedding party. She also makes one-of-a-kind customized Mother's bracelets, New Mom & Baby Sets and glass pendants unlike any others you will find on the web or in a store. Heather also believes in giving back and a portion of the proceeds of all "Mother's" jewelry sold is donated to the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation of San Diego.
